Procedure for Using Benzoyl Peroxide Cream to Treat Mild Non-Inflammatory Acne
By: Marilyn Thompson
Benzoyl peroxide is the most common ingredient in medications for treating mild cases of non-inflammatory acne. You can combine Benzoyl peroxide with other topical or oral treatments for acne. Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic and oxidizing agent. It kills the bacteria present in the skin pores responsible for causing acne.
Mild and moderate acne sufferers find good relief after using benzoyl peroxide creams, lotions, or gels. Acne causes swelling and soreness in the infected pustules and papules. Oxidizing effects of benzoyl peroxide dries the thick sebum within acne and clears your blocked skin pores, accelerating the healing process.
Benzoyl peroxide creams are available as gels, creams, lotions, and cleansers in nonprescription concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. It is also available in prescription medications such as BenzaClin®, Benzamycin®, and Duac™.
Procedure for Using Benzoyl Peroxide
It is essential to follow specific guidelines for using benzoyl peroxide. You can follow as on the label, unless otherwise directed by your physician. Before applying, wash the affected area with non-medicated soap and water. Pat dry with a towel and apply enough medicine to cover the affected areas rubbing in gently.
To use the facial mask form of benzoyl peroxide, first wash with non-medicated soap and water. Pat dry with a towel and apply a thin layer of the mask evenly over the affected area in a circular motion. Allow the mask to dry for 15 to 25 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.
Dosage of Benzoyl Peroxide Treatment
The dosage of benzoyl peroxide is different for different patients. Normally you need to apply one or two times a day on the affected area. Benzoyl peroxide does not offer any permanent cure for your acne as it only kills the bacteria responsible for your acne. It does not affect sebum production or the rate at which you shed your dead skin cells. If you stop using it, the bacteria and your acne return.
Side Effects of Benzoyl Peroxide
Common side effects of benzoyl peroxide include dryness of skin and mild irritation. You can reduce the frequency of usage if there is mild irritation. Serious side effects could result in red, itchy, and dry skin. Discontinue usage if irritation persists. One to two percent of acne sufferers’ are allergic to benzoyl peroxide. Such allergic reactions could be extreme itchiness and redness of skin.
Precautions While Using Benzoyl Peroxide Treatment
Do not apply to wind-burned or sunburned skin or on open wounds.
Do not use in or around eyes or lips, or inside the nose, or on sensitive areas of the neck. Spread the medicine away from these areas when applying. If the medicine gets on these areas, wash with water at once.
